Geotagging: camera phones and sat nav come together

Geotagging is going to be one of the big features for 2008. A lot of new camera phones are coming to market over the next six months and many have built in GPS Sat Nav. Where this doesn’t happen you can often link your mobile phone via Bluetooth to an external GPS unit.

With the GPS facility, such as in the Nokia N82, you can ‘tag’ your photos with location information, which is stored in the exif tag. When you upload your photos to an online storage site such as Flickr, Picasa, Facebook, Myspace or one of the many other image repositories, the location information can be viewed by your friends when they view the picture. So you can take a picture of a favourite landscape on holiday and people will see the exact location where you took the photo.

NVIDIA Tesla: GPU computing gets its own brand

At the moment, NVIDIA Tesla is primarily focused on the highest of the high-end, namely the oil, gas, and computational finance industries. That’s important to keep in mind because the Tesla introduction has answered another question we had when we first looked at CUDA: would it be limited to professional cards, even though the consumer GeForce cards would be capable of using CUDA? The answer is a resounding no. CUDA will be available across all product lines, although eventually there will be some features specific to GPU computing that are only available through the Tesla brand. Instead, Tesla, like Quadro, will be focused as a total solution. Workstations and software will be qualified to work with Tesla, with the same types of support as Quadro.

P2P Software Review: IMesh, Ares and Limewire

iMesh

iMesh has been my P2P software of choice for several years now, since shortly after the untimely death of Napster. Unlike Napster it had the capability to search for video, software, documents, etc.; not just audio. In the beginning it was a fairly popular system and had impressive databases to search from.

The major fault of iMesh as it developed over the years was its strong use of Adware. It eventually got to the point where it was severely damaging my internet use, and I got rid of the whole thing and for a while didn’t use any P2P software whatsoever.

MacBook Air 1.6GHz Review

Laptop design has always been about compromise. Though they’ve come a long way in the past few years, laptops have never been able to offer the features available in desktop computers, and certainly not at comparable prices. In order to squeeze an entire computer into a portable shell (and have it be power-efficient enough to run on a battery for hours at a time), computer makers have to throw features overboard. And the smaller and lighter the laptop, the more compromise there needs to be.

The MacBook Air, Apple’s latest Intel-based laptop, is the lightest, thinnest laptop Apple has ever constructed, and according to Apple, it’s the ‘thinnest laptop ever made’. And in many ways, the story of this laptop is the story of a series of compromises, all made in order to fit an entire Mac in a three-pound package that’s three-quarters of an inch thick at its thickest point.

Asus ZX1 Lamborghini Phone Pops Up Again

I’m not sure where you stand on mobile phones designed with the help of supercar manufacturers but, Lamborghini is making sure it’s not being left at the start by its rivals. We already have the £800 magnesium block - a.k.a. the P9521 - from Porsche and the Motorola Z8 Ferrari Limited Edition phone and now there’s the Asus ZX1 Lamborghini.

This 3.5G/quad-band GSM phone has been roaring about some shows for the last few months and now it’s cropped up at Computex. This is a smartphone running Windows Mobile 6.1 and, as you can see, the Lamborghini influence is strong indeed. Hell, all it needs is wheels and it could be one of those die-cast Lambo replicas.

Sony Mylo (black) CNET Review

Remember a day when the most techie communication device a child could have was a walkie-talkie, or am I dating myself here? From preteens to college students, the younger generation is a growing and important segment for the consumer electronics market, as evidenced by the launch of youth-oriented devices and services, such as the Helio Kickflip and Boost Mobile. Well, Sony wants a piece of that pie and today announced a new personal communication gadget aimed solely at 18- to 22-year-olds, called the Sony Mylo. Mylo, which stands for “my life online,” is for those who love to stay in touch with friends via instant messaging and also want to have some fun on the side. It sits somewhere between a souped-up AT&T Ogo and a scaled-down T-Mobile Sidekick 3, but one thing we want to make clear from the get-go is that it’s not a cell phone. Instead, it’s equipped with built-in Wi-Fi and comes with preinstalled popular instant-messaging clients, VoIP capabilities, a Web browser, and multimedia features. We had the opportunity to check out some working preproduction units, so read on for our impressions.

Upcoming Verizon phone schedule leaked?

Information has leaked on the remainder of Verizon’s cellphone releases for 2008, a report claims. Preeminent in the list are some phones unexpected for Verizon’s roster, such as CDMA versions of the Touch Diamond and the Touch Pro, which will likely rebranded under the carrier’s own naming scheme. Also mentioned is a Samsung phone, the SCH-U310, which does not have any previously published information. The fact is unusual in that many of Samsung’s phones are released in Asia and Europe months before they arrive in North America, and are publicized internationally. No dates have been mentioned for the U310 or the Touches.
